Laura Weldon and Peter Forster are leading Pontefract Conservatives' local action to keep the town centre safe

Local people in Pontefract have had enough of our Labour council's lack of action on the town centre pedestrian zone around Market Place and the buttercross.

Now the Pontefract Conservative team are taking drastic action, and we won't stop until this issue is sorted once and for all.

Laura Weldon - Pontefract Conservatives' Parliamentary Spokesperson and Pontefract South candidate, said:

"This is becoming a joke. Councillors are claiming it's too difficult to get the bollards repaired, or that nobody is responding to the council's tender - well it's about time they get on the phone, ring round and get it sorted. And in the meantime, get the traffic wardens and police out to enforce the rules and fine the people who don't have valid permits."

Conservative Federation Chairman Peter Forster - who will also be standing in Pontefract South - said,

"We're sick of no action being taken here. This is a pedestrian zone for a reason - it's not a car park or a rat run. The people flouting the rules aren't making necessary deliveries to businesses or doing the things that would qualify you for a proper permit - they're picking up takeaway orders or parking up rather than using proper car park spaces. Conservatives won't stand by and wring our hands - we're doing something about it and that's what our campaign is about."

The Pontefract Conservative team mean business - going as far as producing "parking notices" to spread awareness about the need to park safely and obey the road rules, as well as a public petition to make sure that the council takes action - with no more dithering while the problem gets worse.

Laura said:

"There won't be any more excuses for people who claim they didn't know cars and vans are banned in this area without a permit - and our petition will mean that our Labour councillors won't be able to bury their heads in the sand either. It's time to take action in Pontefract, and your Local Conservatives are ready to do whatever is necessary. We're urging people to get behind our petition whoever they support politically - this is about protecting our town."

And local people are invited to get involved by claiming a FREE pack of these parking notices - just add your name to the petition below and you can sign up to receive a pack direct to your door.
